Margaret is an award winning artist and has been painting for 16 years. In her studies, she has learned a variety of techniques and style, which she enjoys teaching her art students. Oil painting is her passion. Margaret moved to Mount Pleasant in 2007 and is membership chair of the Mount Pleasant Artists Guild. She accepts commission work and welcomes art students of all levels. Bio: Capturing the elusive moment when light enhances form has enchanted Katherine Bates since the early 1990s, when she began painting exclusively in watercolor. She has studied with Tom Lynch, Skip Lawrence, Judi Betts and Joel Popadics, whose prismatic palette and emphasis on painting accurate light effects have helped mold her style. Whatever the subject, she tries to capture that ethereal moment when light and color intersect to describe the form. She is known especially for her floral and botanical paintings, one of which was featured in the March 2012 issue of American Art Collector magazine. She is a life member of the Ridgewood Art Institute, an exhibiting member of the Charleston Artists Guild and a member of the Mt. Pleasant Artists Guild.

Robin is best known for her paintings of everything low country, from crabs to pelicans to marsh landscapes. Although she has worked with many media she primarily paints in oils. She feels that oils allow her to express the natural beauty and capture the light and color she sees. Robin grew up in Columbia, SC and worked for many years as a nurse before relocationg to Mt. Pleasant with her husband in 1998. Through the years Robin has been self-taught. She has worked under the direction of Carol McGill, the late Martin Ahrens, Joyce Hall, and currently with Sheryl Stainaker.

As a native of South Carolina, I returned to the state after living in Germany, Maryland and Kansas while in the military. Today I live in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina and recently retired from the Medical University of South Carolina Medical Center. My art work consists of landscapes, usually scenes depicting the surrounding area in the lowcountry. After painting with watercolors for a number of years, I recently started working with soft pastels. With soft pastels I feel that I have truly found my medium. I enjoy the way I can capture the impact of a moment in a landscape by directly applying the pigment with my fingers.

Anne is a native Charlestonian. It was a magic time to be a child in Charleston. Galleries and frame shops were centralized in her neighborhood downtown and she had a childhood job cleaning glass with newspaper and soap for a local art framer. Art was everywhere. It was here that she determined, 'someday I am going to be a painter.' Anne's education and employment has been primarily business focused but she has had the opportunity to be involved in the creative process of everything from beach wear and costume design and construction, to home and institutional decor. She retired from her position at the College of Charleston in 2004 but continues to work in her husband's Mt. Pleasant law firm and eagerly looks forward to retirement and full-time painting. Several years living in the beautiful art and surf community of Laguna Beach, CA confirmed and reignited her desire to learn to paint but life intervened and she did not begin painting until 2010. Since then she has taken numerous classes and workshops with talented artists including Joyce Hall, Laurie Meyer, Hilarie Lambert, Tammy Papa, Angela Cunningham, Judy Crane and others. Her paintings are hanging in homes and businesses locally and throughout the U.S. An oil painting of old Christ Church, Mt. Pleasant is the DVD cover for a film partially funded by the SC Humanities Council and was used again for Note Cards to raise funds to build a church in Africa for a impoverished congregation. Another of her paintings was selected for use in the Town of Mount Pleasant's Planning Guide to represent Shem Creek. She exhibits with the Mount Pleasant Artists Guild and previously served on their Board. Anne works in oil and pastels, both studio and en plein air, and is pleased to meet interested parties by appointment.

Martha Cave grew up in Columbia and then moved to Mt. Pleasant in 1980 where her husband was from. She has two grown children and is excited to have recently become a grandmother. She and her husband spend a lot of time on the waterways where she draws inspiration for painting the local landscapes. She has studied art with several local artists, most recently with Emmy Bronson of Mcclellanville, SC.

Having been a part of the baby boomer generation,  my art studies began after our children were grown.  I have had the good fortune of studies with the Gibbes Museum of Art,  Emily Bronson, West Frasier,  Robert Johnson, and James Pratt,  palette knife painter.  "My art is a combination of expressionism with a touch of realism.  My passion is painting Lowcountry Scenes and powerful florals."

I grew up painting with my grandmother, a local artist in Burlington, North Carolina and knew at an early age that painting was my calling. With a Studio Art Major in college, I thought I would paint my way into the world. But life took a curve when I got married and began to have children. I stayed home to raise a family for a number of years and ultimately went back to work first for International Paper’s Decorative Products division and then for Marabu in North Charleston. So, I kept my hand in the arts, just not in the way I had planned. Once I retired last year, I now paint more than ever and am really enjoying meeting the local artists and taking in all the low country has to offer.My primary medium now is oil, but I have used acrylics, watercolor and pastels. I have participated in various shows over the years winning awards and selling my work.

DeeDee Conant grew up in New Hampshire, after managing / owning two restaurants along with raising 4 children, DeeDee pursued painting in watercolor with a retired graphic artist friend. Moving part time to Sullivan’s Island in 2006 with her husband, Craig and youngest child allowed her to continue to be with her family and elders in NH. Along with fundraising for Project Graduation in Keene NH, she helped Friend’s of Sullivan’s Island raise money to help fill the teaching gap at Sullivan’s Island Elementary School, along with volunteering for the National Park Service when they took over the SI Lighthouse from the Coast Guard. DeeDee joined the Mount Pleasant Artist Guild to continue her passion for Art and Painting in 2014. DeeDee had the pleasure in 2017 of helping Becky Taylor, Michael Kennedy, fellow guild members, open up Perspective Gallery in Mount Pleasant to bring Art into this community for all to enjoy. “Art opens up your mind and brings you to a beautiful place.”
