August Artist of the Month
Jen Spaker

I’ve been painting landscape and still life art for over 20 years. “Plein Air” painting is my favorite way to paint. “Plein Air” means taking your easel outside and finding a scene to paint and trying to complete most of the painting in one or two sessions. It’s a hard and challenging way to paint, but it has made me a stronger artist. I do a mix of plein air and studio paintings.

South Carolina has been my home 12 years- first in Fort Mill and now in the coastal area of Mt. Pleasant, near Charleston. There is so much beautiful scenery in the Low country! Now that I live near the marshes on Horlbeck Creek, and the Wando River, I have fallen in love with the colorful marsh sunsets and the big skies over the water.

I’m originally from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. I also lived in Buffalo and Rochester, NY for twenty years before moving south. I’ve always been an artist, even as a kid. I’m mostly self-taught, and I am a serious and committed painter. I’ve taken a lot of artist workshops over the years. I went to college and got degrees in psychology and nursing. I’ve been married for 30 years and raised three daughters. During Covid times I was able to paint more and decided to apply to some national and regional exhibitions. Some recent exhibitions I was accepted to:

National Oil and Acrylic Painters Society, Best of America Small Works, Spring, 2022, Beverly McNeil Gallery, Birmingham, AL

National Oil and Acrylic Painters Society: Best of America Small Works. Summer 2021, Principle Gallery, Charleston, SC

American Impressionist Society: Small Works Showcase, Spring, 2021, Reinert Gallery, Charleston, SC

Oil Painters of America: Eastern Regional Exhibition, Fall 2020, Reinert Gallery, Charleston, SC.
